This fall’s EARLY Robotics Competition was the largest in its history with over 37 teams participating, including home-school and private school teams from across the county, and Harvard’s Robotics team had 5 teams place in the top six positions. James Yokley and Marcos Coronado won the championship with a dominating performance where they often scored more than 200 points more than their competitors.
They defeated Pilgrim Elementary’s team in the finals by more than 100 points. In third place, Runlin Lui and John Emmons had some of the highest scores in the tournament. Nicholas Martin and Sidney Simms took fourth place. Matthew Syzdek and Thomas Quintero had consistently high scores to give them fifth place, and Amanda Feldman and Chase Summers-Perry took sixth place. Eric Morris, Nicholas Vyner and Anessa Molina had a strong showing for their first tournament.
What does it take to be a successful robotics team? It takes a combination of IB attitudes. First, all of our robotics’ team members showed enthusiasm, independence and commitment when they heard about the difficult challenge where they would have only two minutes to retrieve and move around small scrabble board pieces with robots they had to design. This took over two months to do. Now, that takes commitment in not giving up.! It also takes enthusiasm in maintaining your focus and energy level. It takes independence in figuring out how to do the task on your own.
Finally, the task takes cooperation since one person needs to drive the robot and the other team member needs to gather the collected scrabble pieces, load them on the robot for delivery and time management in getting this task done in only two minutes.
Empathy was also exhibited by Thomas Quintero when James’ and Marco’s treads on the robot broke before the championship round: Thomas reached over and handed them a spare set of treads just in the nick of time, seconds before the match started. He put himself in their shoes and was there for them.
As you can see, being on the robotics team can make you a very good IB student.
