Notable Early Awareness Programs

Think College Early
US Department of Education's early awareness effort. It provides information for students, parents and educators about planning for and paying for a college education.

Project Grad
Project Grad couples curricular improvements with student and family support programs, college guidance and college scholarships to help increase the number of lower-income students matriculating in college. They focus on the elementary and middle "feeder" schools that supply students to high schools, as they have found that interventions must begin before the 9th grade.

College Is Possible
The College Is Possible web site is an early awareness initiative sponsored by the American Council on Education. It provides information about preparing for college, choosing a college, and paying for college.

Serve as a parent host to speakers. Meet and greet speakers, and escort speakers to classrooms.

Recommend a speaker! Speakers can be Harvard parents of other community leaders/professionals.

The College Bound Culture (CBC) program started with one small, important change in the dress code last school year. On Fridays, students could wear a favorite college t-shirt. Now they can wear them any weekday. Harvard Elementary is the only HISD Elementary with an organized plan of action and actual college awareness program.

Early College Awareness. Why? Students who are exposed to college from an early stage are more likely to view college as a viable option. 27% of students whose parents did not go to college are currently enrolled in 4-year institutions---compared to 71% of students whose parents have bachelor's degrees.

Early college awareness is a key step to raising aspirations. It helps young students see possibilities in their future and, most important, it helps them understand how to access those opportunities.

A school with a strong college bound culture creates opportunities for students to explore higher education. Harvard plays a pivotal role with academically rigorous curriculum and classroom instruction, college exposure, high & clear expectations from all school staff and parent involvement. At Harvard, our goal is to surround our students with a culture that states "When you go to college ..." not "If you go to college ..."

What Harvard's ongoing College Bound Culture looks like:
